Domaine Tempier’s Bandol Classique is a benchmark for age-worthy southern French reds. Predominantly Mourvèdre from vines averaging over 40 years of age, this 2007 bottling was aged in large oak foudres for 18–20 months. It delivers a powerful nose of dried red fruit, earthy spice, and leather, with a firm tannic backbone and unmistakable Mediterranean character.
Notes on the producer
Domaine Tempier, located in the heart of Bandol, is one of the region’s most celebrated estates, particularly known for its dedication to Mourvèdre. Managed for decades by the Peyraud family, the domaine has long been a pioneer in promoting traditional farming and winemaking practices in Provence. The estate’s 38 hectares of vines, situated on clay-limestone soils with maritime influence, are certified organic and largely composed of old-vine Mourvèdre, complemented by Grenache and Cinsault.
Domaine Tempier produces several cuvées, including single-vineyard bottlings such as La Migoua, La Tourtine, and Cabassaou, but the Classique cuvée offers a quintessential expression of Bandol terroir. With proper cellaring, these wines evolve beautifully over decades, gaining complexity, savory depth, and a hauntingly earthy elegance that defines the best of the appellation.
