The vineyards are farmed organically (Domaine Guiberteau converted to organic practices in the early 2000s) and the fruit is mostly hand-harvested. Grapes are gently whole-cluster pressed, fermented with indigenous yeasts and typically undergo a blocked malolactic on the whites. The wine is aged on its fine lees in stainless steel tanks, large foudres and some neutral/used barrels for c. 7–12 months with minimal SO₂ additions and light filtration prior to bottling in the spring following the vintage. The result is focused, citrus-led Chenin with honeyed notes, chalky limestone minerality and a saline, textural finish.
Notes on the producer
Domaine Guiberteau is a family estate centred on the work of Romain Guiberteau. The domaine (c. 17–19 ha) sits around Saumur and Brézé, planting both Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc on clay-limestone / tuffeau soils prized in the area. Romain has raised the domaine’s profile since taking charge, concentrating on terroir-driven expressions of the Brézé and surrounding sites and working organically (AB) in the vineyards. His Saumur blancs — from younger village parcels through to the famed Brézé sites — are known for their precision, mineral intensity and a relatively low-intervention cellar approach that favours lees contact, restraint in new oak and preserving varietal clarity.
