Elodie is made from grapes sourced from two Swartland bush vine blocks: 30% from Jakkalsfontein, with its granite soils planted in 1981 and 70% from Nuweland, known for its iron-rich soils planted in 1982. The wine was whole bunch pressed and wild fermented, with 10% aged in clay amphorae and the rest in older 400- and 500L barrels. It spent nine months on its lees before blending and bottling. The result is a beautifully creamy and fatty Chenin with layers of baked apple and honey.
Notes on the producer
Gabriëlskloof was founded by South African Bernhard Heyns, who spent years searching for the perfect land that would "root him to the spot." In 2001, he found a former canola farm called 'Avontuur' and saw its potential to produce high-quality wines. Since then, Gabriëlskloof has been run by the Heyns family, with many local community members rising to key roles at the farm.
The farm is committed to uplifting the local community, having both participated in and initiated several local development programs. Since Peter-Allan Finlayson became cellar master in 2014, the farm has entered an exciting new chapter, with wines from their Landscape Series and Projects Range regularly receiving critical acclaim.
