There are only a handful of producers in Côte-Rôtie who craft wine akin to the Barges' approach. Their method, characterised by organic farming, whole-cluster fermentation, and ageing in large, neutral wooden barrels, embodies a beautiful simplicity. Yet, amidst the modern wine scene, this pursuit of minimalism appears to elude many within the region.
Notes on the producer
Domaine Barge is a small historic estate in Cote-Rotie. The Barge family goes back to the 1860s in the region and were instrumental in having the appellation recognized in the AOC sytem back in 1940. Julien Barge took over the winemaking from his father Gilles Barge in 2018 and began making moves towards more organic farming and production. Total ownership is around 5.7 hectares of Cote-Rotie, 1 hectare of Condrieu and 1.5 hectares of St-Joseph. Les Cotes is a blend of diffferent parcels from the Cote Blonde, Cote Brune and Combard vineyards. The wine is made with 95% Syrah and 5% Viognier. Grapes are fermented with native yeasts, and spend 28 months aging in 600L oak barrels. (In Organic Conversion)
