Grapes are hand harvested and must is fermented using indigenous yeasts in concrete tanks, followed by a 20 day maceration. Wine then ages for 20 months in French and American oak barrels.
Notes on the producer
Founded in 1997 by three friends-- a priest, a teacher and a winemaker-- this bodega is named after the 12th century Cartoixa d'Escaladei, a Carthusian Monastery now in ruins located in the nearby village of Scala Dei-- which translates as the Ladder of God. The very talented and energetic Jordi Vila is the winemaker and the driving force behind the project. He fell in love with Priorat while studying viticulture and oenology in nearby Falset and has the utmost respect for the region and its rich winemaking history. They own and lease about 25 ha, the majority of them over 30 years old with some vineyards up to 80 years old.
