Wine for Steak

What makes a wine work with steak?

Tannin and protein are the classic match, but balance matters. A good steak wine should have enough structure for beef without feeling hot, sweet or clumsy. Freshness, savoury detail and a clean finish make the pairing much better.

Styles to look for

Cabernet-led Bordeaux, Syrah, Malbec, Nebbiolo, Sangiovese, structured Mediterranean reds and some richer Pinot Noir styles can all work. The right choice depends on the cut, sauce and cooking: leaner steak can take a fresher red, while ribeye or chargrilled meat can handle more depth.

Beyond steak

These wines also work with lamb, mushrooms, roast vegetables, burgers, hard cheeses and darker, savoury dishes. They are useful bottles whenever the food needs structure rather than simple fruit.
