Why Cave selected it

Benchmark, old-school Barolo from a top Monforte cru combining fragrance and depth; organically farmed and increasingly scarce.

About the wine

Coming from vines planted in 1937, these old vines are in tune with their wonderful mostly south facing position and yield fruit that is balanced, rich and deep with flavour and harmony. Fermented for 21-28 days, with natural yeasts and submerged caps, these wines are then aged for up to 7 years in Slavonian oak, and even though the minimum is some 60 months the average is most likely quite close to the full 7 years. This a Barolo producer to watch. They are going from strength to strength so grab them whilst the prices are still affordable.

Notes on the producer

Perched atop some of the highest hills in the region in a community east of Barolo, in the hamlet of Monforte d’Alba, resides Cascina Disa Elio Sandri. Every part of Sandri’s winemaking is slow and gentle, allowing for very low levels of sulphur and no other additions. The results are exquisite, ultra-traditional terroir-driven wines of unbridled elegance and poise with a seemingly endless lifespan. Very long maceration, deep ethereal aromas and intensity on the palate.
