Freshness, texture and detail
These regions are often associated with white wine, but the range is broader than that. Riesling can be dry, saline and racy; Gruner Veltliner can be peppery and textured; Silvaner can feel earthy and quietly savoury. Reds from Spatburgunder, Blaufrankisch and Zweigelt bring lift rather than heaviness.
How to choose
For bright aperitif wines and seafood, start with Riesling, Gruner or crisp German whites. For food-friendly reds, look for Spatburgunder or Austrian red varieties served a little cool. These bottles are especially useful when you want freshness but not simplicity.
