Light red wines are about freshness, energy and drinkability rather than weight. The best examples still have proper character: bright fruit, lively acidity, gentle to moderate tannin and enough savoury detail to keep things interesting. Many work well slightly chilled, especially with lighter dishes, but they are not all the same style. This collection is selected for reds that feel agile at the table, from crisp Loire and Jura bottles to juicy Alpine, Spanish, Italian and new-wave reds.

£43.00A lighter red usually has less body and softer tannin than a fuller, more structured bottle. Acidity often plays a bigger role, keeping the wine fresh and making the fruit feel brighter. That does not mean thin or simple: good light reds can be fragrant, mineral, spicy, herbal or earthy. The important thing is balance, with enough structure to work with food but not so much weight that the wine dominates.
Many lighter reds benefit from a modest chill, especially if they are low in tannin and high in freshness. Think cellar-cool rather than icy: a short spell in the fridge can sharpen the fruit and make the wine more refreshing. Fuller or more tannic reds can feel hard when too cold, so the collection focuses on bottles where a cooler serve makes sense.
Lighter reds are useful with food that wants freshness rather than power. Try them with charcuterie, roast chicken, pork, mushrooms, grilled vegetables and tomato-led dishes. Some brighter examples can also work with oily fish, especially when served a little cool. They are often the red wines to reach for when a heavy bottle would flatten the meal.
