Why Cave selected it

A vibrant, certified-organic Sicilian Frappato that’s light, chillable and expressive of Iblei limestone—great versatility with Mediterranean dishes at a fair price.

About the wine

This Frappato comes from vines planted on calcareous and clay soils facing south at 480 metres above sea level. The grapes are selected and harvested by hand and, once they reach the winery, they are destemmed, pressed and fermented on the skins for several days. The wine is then transferred to 22-hectolitre oak barrels where it will remain for at least 12 months before bottling. Light juicy and the perfect Spring/Summertime red.

Notes on the producer

The Pianogrillo farm is an ancient Sicilian fief, in the Iblei mountains in Chiaramonte Gulfi, and has belonged to the Piccione di Pianogrillo barons for centuries. In Pianogrillo they produce high quality, well-known extra virgin olive oil and , since a few years, also wine, all with organic and biodynamic methods. The average altitude is about 480m/asl, with calcareous clay soils, cool and windy nights even in summer. Everything on the farm is aimed at safeguarding nature and respecting the natural environment. As a result, they produce excellent quality wines that reflect the original character of the place.
