Why Cave selected it

Rare Gamay from the Northern Rhône with purity and energy, made with low‑intervention methods and organic farming. Offers transparent granite-influenced fruit and great versatility at the table.

About the wine

The farming is certified-organic and the harvest is done entirely by hand. Grapes are carefully destemmed, gently macerated with minimal extraction and fermented spontaneously with indigenous yeasts and no added sulphur. The wine undergoes partial carbonic maceration to enhance its bright fruit character, followed by élevage in neutral vessels, mainly old barrels and concrete tanks, for around 8 months. Bottling is done without fining or filtration and minimal sulphur is used only at bottling if necessary. Lively, earthy, and pure Gamay expressing the granitic soils of the Northern Rhône.

Notes on the producer

Francois Dumas is part of a new generation of Rhône vignerons focused on crafting expressive, minimal-intervention wines from small, organic vineyards tucked away in the hills above Saint-Joseph. Working with old vines rooted in granite soils, Francois farms by hand and avoids all synthetic treatments, with an emphasis on soil health and biodiversity. His cellar work is gentle and traditional, favouring native fermentations, whole-cluster inclusion, and aging in neutral oak and concrete to preserve the vibrant, terroir-driven character of the fruit. His Gamay bottlings have garnered a cult following for their purity, energy, and striking sense of place, making them highly sought-after wines with very limited production—secure them while you can.

About François Dumas

François Dumas, hailing from the village of Véranne in the Loire department, initially aspired to be a sports teacher. His journey into winemaking began in 2004, when he discovered a passion for vines during a season at Cuilleron. This newfound interest led him to pursue a Professional Certificate (BPREA) in Tournon and gain experience working at Domaine Trapet in Gevrey-Chambertin for a year. In 2010, François returned to Véranne to craft his first vintage. By 2013, he had acquired plots in Saint Joseph and Condrieu, which received acclaim in tastings. François has since expanded his vineyards, reclaiming wastelands and adopting an innovative approach to cultivating both red and white grape varieties. Today, he organically manages 4 hectares of vines, a practice he has upheld since the beginning. His wines, lightly sulfited before bottling, contain a total SO2 of around 15-25 mg/L for reds and 25-35 mg/L for whites. We are delighted to present François' wines, which offer a fresh perspective on Northern Rhône wines with their focus on extended aging without new wood and a keen sense of tension. These are sincere and honest wines, reflective of the winemaker himself.
