Why Cave selected it

A benchmark biodynamic Loire red: honest, low-extraction Grolleau with vibrancy and versatility that suits our guests’ everyday food and takeaway occasions.

About the wine

The farming is certified biodynamic, with meticulous hand-harvesting. The grapes are 100% destemmed before undergoing spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts in concrete tanks. No sulfur is added during vinification. The wine is aged on fine lees for nearly a year without bâtonnage or racking to preserve freshness and texture. Bottling is done unfiltered and unfined, typically the autumn following the vintage. This red delivers vibrant cherry fruit layered with earthy nuances and a beautifully balanced structure.

Notes on the producer

Ferme De La Sansonniere is a family-run domaine nestled in the heart of the Loire Valley, championing biodynamic practices for over a decade. The team manages their vineyards near the village of Rochefort-sur-Loire, an area known for its cool climate and schist soils that contribute to the freshness and mineral backbone of their wines. They transitioned to biodynamics in 2010, focusing on soil health and vine balance without the use of synthetic chemicals. Harvesting is carefully done by hand into small crates to ensure grape integrity. Fermentation is carried out naturally, and the winery embraces minimal intervention, with aging predominantly in neutral concrete tanks or old oak barrels to respect the purity of the Gamay grape. Their wines are celebrated for their expression of terroir, elegance, and vibrant energy, making them a sought-after find for lovers of Loire reds.
