Chave’s Saint-Joseph red comes from steep granitic slopes, with fruit sourced from estate-owned parcels primarily around Mauves and Saint-Jean-de-Muzols. Aged in large oak foudres and barrels, this wine balances pure Syrah fruit—blackberry and violet—with deep notes of smoke and graphite, showcasing both power and finesse.
Notes on the producer
The Chave family has been making wine in the Rhône since 1481, and Jean-Louis Chave now oversees one of the most revered estates in France. While the family's fame is centered on Hermitage, they have painstakingly restored old hillside terraces in Saint-Joseph, now producing some of the appellation's finest reds. Farming is organic, with low yields and meticulous vineyard work. The Saint-Joseph wines are made with whole-cluster fermentation and aged in a mix of large and small oak, focusing on elegance, terroir expression, and age-worthiness. Chave’s reds are known for their ability to develop complexity over decades, often entering a more expressive phase after 8–10 years in bottle.
