Why Cave selected it

A supple, food-friendly Saint-Émilion that brings ripe fruit and a savoury finish without losing its freshness.

About the wine

Ripe red berries and plum meet a gently savoury, spicy edge in this supple Saint-Émilion Grand Cru. The 2019 blend is 85% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Carmenère, with fresh fruit at its centre and fine tannins keeping the finish lively.

Fermentation and ageing take place mainly in stainless steel, with 30% in barrel. The result is a generous Bordeaux with enough freshness for the table: try it with roast lamb, beef or a mushroom pie.

About Château de Fonbel

Château de Fonbel lies south of Saint-Émilion and has belonged to the Vauthier family, also owners of Château Ausone, since 1971. Its 16 hectares include sandy, gravelly and clay-rich soils. Merlot leads the wines, with Cabernet Sauvignon and Carmenère contributing structure and spice. Work in the vineyard and cellar is shared with the wider Vauthier estates, with an emphasis on fruit, balance and the character of each site.
