Why Cave selected it

A benchmark value Bierzo Mencía: vivid fruit, peppery lift and easy structure from old vines, made with respectful farming—versatile and crowd‑pleasing.

About the wine

The grapes are hand-harvested in 12 kg boxes, sorted manually, and then fermented in tanks at 25ºC for 15 days with periodic pumping over. Lovely and juicy mencia.

About Bodegas Pittacum

The Pittacum project began in 1999 in Arganza, Bierzo, a region in León rediscovering its winemaking heritage. Driven by a passion for wine, three partners from Ponferrada focused on the Mencía grape to showcase the distinctive character of local wines. By 2002, Terras Gauda acquired a 65% stake in the winery. Bodegas Pittacum cultivates 5 hectares of Mencía vineyards on gentle slopes across Arganza, Valtuille, Villafranca, and Ponferrada, adhering to organic farming practices. The vines, aged 50 to 80 years, are complemented by carefully selected grapes from other Bierzo areas. In vinification, the grapes are processed in 15,000-litre stainless steel tanks to enhance their fruitiness, and the wine is aged in American and French oak barrels with varying degrees of toast, which are gradually renewed every three years.
