Clemens & Lukas Strobl, Donauschotter Riesling, 2020
Stone Fruit, Orchard Fruit, Mineral
Clemens & Lukas Strobl
Everything is done here by hand. A Manual harvest, followed by pressing in a basket press. The juice is then transferred to wooden barrel & concrete egg.Spontaneous fermentation follows before bottling unfined & unfiltered. Wagram is not as famous as the Wachau and Kamptal but they have some of the best sites for Riesling and Gruner in Austria.
Notes on the producer
Clemens Strobl’s vineyards are located in and around the village of Feuersbrunn in the Wagram. Although Wagram’s reputation as a wine producing region is less established than Kamptal or Wachau, it is home to some of the best sites for Riesling and Grüner Veltliner. Clemens planted his first vines in 2009 - starting with a single hectare in his most important Cru - Rosenberg. He released his first vintage commercially in 2011. Today the family holds 15 hectares in some of the most exciting vineyards in Wagram where the loam and loess soils are several metres deep and the tertiary gravel over one million years old. The wines are elegant, complex and terroir-driven, and the Strobl family keep the parcels small in order to focus on producing the best quality wines from single vineyard sites. With Lukas slowly taking over the responsibility of the vineyards and the cellar (after having worked with the likes of Martin Gojer of Pranzegg and Clemens Busch) they constantly look at increasing biodiversity within their vineyards while keeping their impact in the cellar to a minimum.
