Château Pape Clement

Merlot/Cabernet Sauvignon

Wine Type

Pessac-Leognan AOC, Bordeaux

Benefiting from the same micro-climate as its neighbor Haut-Brion, Pape Clément produces very aromatic, supple and incredibly refined red wines. A large proportion of Merlot, the source of a remarkable velvety texture, makes them accessible from their youth, although their ability to age is exceptional in great vintages.

Notes on the Producer

The history of Pape-Clément dates back to the 13th century, when Bertrand de Goth, then Archbishop of Bordeaux, received these lands as a gift. Elected Pope in 1306, he took the name of Clement V and renamed his property "Pope Clement", before bequeathing it to the Bordeaux clergy, who kept the production for their own consumption. After the revolution, the estate went through a long succession of owners, which seemed to lead it slowly to decline, then a painful hailstorm in 1937, which nearly put an end to its legend. Fortunately, the land was bought in 1939 by agricultural engineer Paul Montagne, who marked the rebirth of the estate by replanting the vines and renovating the cellars, before handing over to his son Léo.s.

From 1953, the successful vintages flourished again, but once again, From 1975, a lack of investment harmed quality for around ten years. It was the arrival in co-ownership of Bernard Magrez, an emblematic Bordeaux figure, which in 1985 marked the definitive return to high-level production, a boom now reinforced by the talents of the famous consultant oenologist, Michel Rolland.
